I am looking for a new homepage design for the popular financial news site http://oilprice.com
(For more complete instructions Please look at the word attachment titled: Instructions for OilPrice.com Homepage Design)
The current design really isn’t cutting it and i would like to create an impression that there is a big publishing company behind it.
The majority of our visitors are: investors, traders, fund managers, energy company executives, etc... So it’s a well educated and critical audience who know what they do and don’t like.
The layout will need to completely change and there will be some new sections that need to be added which i will walk through below.
One of the things i have to mention is that there will be a lot of information on this one page – so i want it designed in a way that there isn’t information overload – as with some newspaper sites there are just too many headings and the cramped way they have the text is just too much.
Okay, onto the design:
Could you please visit: http://www.thestreet.com/
Here you will see the kind of layout i’m after and also the sort of professionalism and clarity of design. (I have also attached a design Homepage 1a that has lots of good things in it that may be helpful as you go along.)
What i like about this design:
I like the whole layout of the page – the colours used – the blue outside the frame, the border style – it just looks very professional and like a big company is behind it. I would like OilPrice.com to feel like this – basically a better looking version of this.
I like the size, and text and colouring of their navigation buttons – although the colour may not work with oilprice – so it would be good if you could try different colours.
This colour issue is something to look at – just because i like the colouring of the street things i believe other colours may work better – i’m really highlighting this because it helps create a professional feel.
I like how the page is positioned – The outer light blue the white inner part – with the thin line between them both – then how the various main parts are separated by thin blue lines and then the light blue in the filler space (again i like the blue – but other colours may also work.)
How i would like the New OilPrice.com to look.
At the top there will be the logo and slogan and a banner space the exact size we currently see: 728x90.
Underneath this there is the navigation (again please make this more sexy – the street is a good place to start – i also like the navigation look and feel on http://www.forexpros.com )
The scrolling ticker on the current version of http://oilprice.com (underneath the navigation) is going – Please Remove the Scrolling Ticker.
The Charts underneath are all going – Please Remove the 4 charts you currently see.
So basically i just want Navigation – then we get to the main part of the site.
Firstly – the right hand column. I have attached a file called Chart – this will need to go on the right hand side of the Screen and the right hand margin will need to be this wide + 5 pixels.
Underneath this i would like a box saying join us on Facebook/Twitter, Feedburner – basic stuff that a lot of sites have. (See attachment – Homepage 1 – Go down the right hand side and you will see a red Subscribe to our RSS feed box.)
Underneath this it would be nice to see Small boxes like on the left hand side of http://www.forexpros.com (But twice as high and twice as long) – basically small company logos.
I have attached a design (Homepage 1) which can help a little – But DO NOT copy it as it isn’t right and if you do you really won’t get far in the comp.
So if you look at the street and the Homepage 1 attachment you will see on the left hand side a picture. Underneath this a title and then some text – if you could add a little bit more text than The Street version this would be great (But it should not be bold.)
Underneath this i would like a title saying: Latest Energy News
Here we just need the titles – nothing else The Street has done this pretty well (Say 6 titles) Then after the last one have a link for: More News
To the right of this – Where The Street has Don’t Miss – You don’t need to put any title.
Just have 3 or 4 articles with Titles and a small bit of text.
Now i happen to think this looks a bit scrappy on The Street – so i’m hoping you will be able to improve on it. Attachment Homepage1a – should also help here.
Underneath this where The Street has: Latest News – please have the title:
Company News: Energy
Here please take a look at attachment: Homepage 1 – how they have the title and the Pdf to the left is exactly right (again please don’t copy the text, or design – just the idea.)
We will need space for 6 titles. I will also need the title of this and first few pieces above the fold (before you have to scroll down.)
Underneath this i would like a section (but shaded/boxed off) called:
Energy Intelligence Reports
This should have 5 articles in it – the heading and some text. – But it needs to look special – maybe with a picture at the top by energy intelligence – as this is our subscriber content – so we really want to draw visitors eyes here. I have attached another design (Homepage1a)
Which if you go to the right hand side you will see a right column titled: Learn from the experts – this type of thing could work here.
Left hand Side:
Underneath the Latest Energy News section please can you have a section called:
Energy & Finance Articles
This should go down for about 10 articles and should have the title and some text.
If you take a look at: http://www.naa.org/ - you will see how they have done the left hand side and it really is quite neat (under events)
Actually mixing the feel of the above site with The Street could work really well.
You can see what we currently have on Homepage-1 and Homepage1a – but neither really set me on fire – Please try something funky/fresh and professional here.
Logo and Top Header:
I like the emblem and thinks it works pretty well - but if you have any other ideas for the logo please do give them a try. (See OilPrice header attachment.)
That is it really – what i really want is for the site to look great – look like it’s a big company behind it – but i don’t want it to be too texty – i want to keep people on the page and hoping you will find a way of designing this page so people don’t get information overload.
I have put a few sites below that you may gain some inspiration from – none of them are perfect – but they may just help to give you some ideas.
If you have any questions please fire me a message and I’ll get back with you as quickly as I can.
