Free High School Science Texts
The Free High School Science Text (FHSST) project directs the contributions of volunteers with expertise in maths and science to create school Maths and Science textbooks for South Africa. (See http://www.fhsst.org) These textbooks are released for free under an open license so that more students can gain access to the knowledge and information. The texts are downloadable for free in digital format and available in printed format at a fraction of the cost of proprietary textbooks. These volunteers freely contribute their time, energy and expertise to write sections of these books, produce solutions to the exercises or edit the writings in order to advance maths and science education in South Africa, Africa and elsewhere.
This project is owned by Siyavula (http://www.siyavula.org.za), the organisation which resources and drives it and Siyavula is “seeded by Shuttleworth Foundation” (http://www.shuttleworthfoundation.org). Appropriate logos to be included.
Students at local and foreign universities who are familiar with mathematics and physics at a a final or post-graduate level. These include the faculties of engineering, mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, chemistry, physics, statistics. They have an appetite to share their knowledge, a desire to fix the world or remedy the social issues such as access to education. They are comfortable with science, maths, technology and computers.
We want a poster which will inspire university students to volunteer to help create free and open resources. We need Maths and Science students to help us write free textbooks to save education in South Africa and Africa.
Medium: Printed poster also as flyer.
The concept:
- maths and science students are sophisticated machines which takes pizza as input or fuel to produce world change.
- Science student + pizza = world change
- Science students + pizza = world changing free textbooks
- Converting pizza into intellectual progress
- Students are superheroes with super powers to convert pizza into
- Or variations to the theme
This idea borrows from many science/maths/computer science students’ familiarity with the ‘mission’ atmosphere and camaraderie when teaming up and hacking away at something scientific, often spanning a number of days, working in the wee hours of the morning, running on pizza and caffeine to produce a result that is disproportionate the available resources.
Produce a print quality (vector files required) visual. We do not specify the copy or imagery with the hope of drawing out the creative contributions.
The poster should function well when viewed from a distance and be able to capture passers-by’s attention to come closer and read the more detailed information.
Poster title or copy: be creative!
Must include:
White blocks for Venue, Date, Time and Contact email. – where details can be entered with marker.
