See the full brief for details. The Orchard Project (https://www.theorchardproject.org.uk/) is a UK charity that brings orchards to cities and towns across the country. We want to start a membership programme and launch a ‘Sponsor a Tree’ product. People would sponsor the planting, nurturing and upkeep of a tree and the orchard they live in. In return the sponsor will receive updates from the ‘tree’, be invited to events and some of the fruit in one of the cities they work in will also be used in a social enterprise to make juice and cider.
To do this we want to design a personificated apple tree character to sit alongside our existing logo and branding.
This would be then used on the website and offline materials promoting the two schemes.
The Orchard Project have two specific target audiences for fundraising from individuals:
• 40+, live in cities, family orientated and have a strong sense of community. They will volunteer for organisations. Local is important to them and they will see this as a chance to ‘give back’.
• 40+, heritage is important to them. They will be affluent and live in the suburbs. They will have nostalgic memories of fruit trees and likely to be conservative (small ‘c’). They may be a trustee of a church or local charity and belong to other organisations such as English Heritage or the National Trust.

Designs zur Inspiration
The tree should look stylish, contemporary and distinguished. It needs to appeal to the two target audiences, so need to design for a middle-aged and upwards audience.
The Orchard Project is inclusive and balances a serious focus on its impacts with a friendly, fun and inviting culture and profile. It doesn’t want to be seen as too “serious” and so there can be an element of fun in the design. This however, needs to be balanced against the fact that it is a charity – a mission-led cause that is driving real impacts with real people and spaces. It needs to project a sense of being something meaningful, important and worthy of a financial act of support. Working and volunteering for the charity was described as ‘the warm glow you get from a hot mug of mulled wine on a crisp winter’s day’.
