The big picture story is that there are a variety of factors that impact a families decision of a Jewish or secular early childhood center (ECE). There are two stages to this decision. First, they must include a Jewish ECE among the centers they consider. Then they much choose a Jewish ECE to enroll their child. A variety of factors impact one or both of these decisions. In the next section, I list the factors that impact these. There is also an additional section that looks at the field and measures how many of these centers are on the "wrong" side of some of these factors. NOTE: Some factors impact both decisions. People should visually realize that this theme impacts both decisions.

Predicting Consideration of Jewish ECE 1. Jewish Background • Families that prioritize teaching about Judaism are more likely to consider a Jewish ECE 2. Family Size • Families with 2 or 3+ children are more likely to consider a Jewish ECE than those with just 1 child 3. Marketing • Parents who went to an information fair were less likely to consider a Jewish ECE 4. Ages served and hours of operation • Families who needed infant care were less likely to choose a Jewish ECE 5. Convenience/Proximity • The farther a family lives from a Jewish ECE the less likely they are to consider it Predicting Choice of Jewish ECE 1. Jewish Background • Families that prioritize teaching about Judaism are more likely to choose a Jewish ECE • Families that prioritized the majority of teachers being Jewish were more likely to choose a Jewish ECE • Families that prioritized children have similar backgrounds more likely to choose a Jewish ECE • Families that prioritized friends having children at the school more likely to choose a Jewish ECE 2. Marketing • Families that utilized community list serves were less likely to choose a Jewish ECE • Parents that utilized ECE websites were less likely to choose a Jewish ECE 3. Condition of facility • Families that prioritized the condition of a center were more likely to choose a Jewish ECE 4. Convenience/Proximity • Families that sought an ECE on the way to work were less likely to choose a Jewish ECE. • The farther a family lives from a Jewish ECE the less likely they are to choose it 5. Ages served and hours of operation • Parents needing earlier drop-off or later pickup were less likely to choose a Jewish ECE • Families that needed an ECE that provides full year coverage were less likely to choose a Jewish ECE This part above is my priority as it was the main findings of the research. I have a few facts which help generalize the findings from one city to a national trend so if you have space these could be included: • According to Jdata.com, which tracks Jewish educational institutions nationwide, over 50 Jewish ECEs to close their doors since 2010. • Of 253 ECEs with data, almost half operate 8 hour days but only 30% operate 10 hours giving parents time to drop their child off and commute to and from work. • Nearly half of 423 ECEs reporting to Jdata since 2010 offer 48 or more weeks of coverage. Just fewer than 40% offer between 40-47 weeks of coverage per year and 15% report offering 30 or fewer weeks of early childhood education. • Fewer than one-fourth of 499 ECEs since 2010 offer infant care. Ten schools at some point in the five year period indicated that they had infants but their most recent report did not include them so it is possible the rate is closer to one in five Jewish ECEs.

I have a few ideas but am open to other ideas you all have as you have a better visual sense than I do. I recently saw a infographic where the main focus was a road going from top to bottom. Since geography is important that could be interesting. Another thought could be a scale similar to the scales of Justice. On one side of the scale would be symbols for the factors that make families more likely to choose a Jewish ECE while the other side would be factors that decrease the likelihood. Below each side of the scales could be the symbol and what the findings are. A third idea is could also be designed as a simple path referencing the different elements that impact the two stages of the decision process. URLs for examples below. Ideally the image would be formatted so it could print on a sheet of paper but I could also go with a legal sheet if we need more height. I am attaching a draft editorial about the full report that will coincide with the release of the report. This could provide additional guidance on how I think about these findings. I am attaching my consulting logo in case you want to include it our use it for color choices. I did this in a different role so I am debating using it. I am also including the logo of CJP (who the research was done for). I need to check in with them to see if they would want it included.
