I am looking to redesign the covers in my Epic Zero book series (please see the attached poster that features all of the current covers). Successful books in this genre often feature fun images of a main character with background characters or elements in a bold, graphic style that is also clear in thumbnail size. It is important that the cover features elements of both adventure and humor.
For this contest I am looking for an iconic cover design architecture for book 1 that can also be extended to books 2 and 3. The character follows an arc in which he is powerless in book 1, discovers his powers in book 2, and has to master his powers in book 3. All three books in the series will need to have a common look and feel. The winner of the contest will most likely be requested to design the other 2 books in the series as a paid follow-up.
I am looking for an original, illustration style (not photos and no stock images/icon figures). I have attached an image of the main character (Elliott), but am not looking for a literal replication of this drawing style. Attached are some examples of inspiring covers in this genre (Evertaster, Sidekicked, and Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja).
I particularly like the Evertaster cover for its high quality illustrative style, dimensional character design, and the subtle expression of the character as she looks behind her at the background character. I would love to see this style replicated with Elliott in regular clothes, perhaps subtly looking back as his superhero family flies off to fight crime without him (a scenario that happens frequently in the story).
Please see "Men of Tomorrow" cover and my poster for examples of how Elliott's family could be treated. Flying off into the sky in the background.
I am open to other design concepts but it is important that the cover visually contrasts his comically frustrated feeling of being an ordinary boy left out of an extraordinary family of superheroes.
Please note: the character should not be in a superhero costume. The point of the story is that Elliott is NOT a superhero in book 1, but everyone else in his family is.
The dimensions of the book are 5.25" x 8" (13.335 x 20.32 cm). The spine is .475". I will need ebook files for Amazon Kindle, and paperback files for both Amazon Createspace, and Ingram Spark/Lightning Source.
