A Quart Jar of Peaches
John J. Mahoney
John is the author of eight books, including three collections of poetry, and is a long-time food and wine columnist. A lifelong educator, he is a respected scholar of Shakespeare and Chaucer who has taught at the high school and university level. A former New Jersey Freeholder and candidate for the United States Congress, John is now best known as an internationally recognized wine expert.
This “coming of age” novel is about a twelve year old during the summer of 1956. The adventures he and his local friends have during that summer, and one flashback to the previous winter, help to show what thoughts they had as they matured. Coming to grips with death is what takes away the narrator’s youth.
The lead character, Johnny, and his best friend, Billy, grow together and share concerns and wonder about the universe. Everything is straight forward as the main character reflects on his dog’s death, just as his grandmother, and then his grandfather die.
When his older brother tells him that they “just moved up a generation,” he realizes life will never be the same, but everything he’s learned from his summer activities will help guide him through his future life.
Nostalgic baby boomers. North American.

There are mentions of two young boys lying on the grass near a spruce tree looking for the Big Dipper (and the stars) a number of times in the book. We might explore an Impressionist-style rendering of this idea. The other obvious choice is a bell quart preserving jar and peaches, reflective of the title.
