The Green Priest is a gritty post-apocalyptic fantasy novel set hundreds of years after a catastrophic flood.
It has rained for centuries, and handfuls of survivors eke out an existence amidst the flooded, overgrown ruins of a forgotten civilisation. The settlers of Shelter - including a young hunter called Halvar - ply their trade on the waterways surrounding the hollowed-out mountainside they call home, until a chance encounter with a legendary order of priests destroys their way of life.

I like the aesthetic of modern fantasy covers in the vein of Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, and Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind - a relatively dark, foreboding backdrop accented by bold colours and subtle fantasy imagery. I'd like the colour green to feature heavily, and as the novel's protagonists - the Green Priests - wear dark green hooded cowls, we could toy with using that imagery somehow. The overall tone of the book is dark, gritty and serious.
Other visual ideas to consider:
- Forests: the world is heavily overgrown and smothered in thick woodland.
- Rivers: thousands of rivers and tributaries provide the main means of travel around the world.
- Ruins: the story is set hundreds of years after the collapse of our world. Destroyed buildings from a near-future litter the landscape, metalwork rusted, bricks crumbling to dust.
Was vermieden werden soll
I dislike designs that rely too heavily on stock photography (especially of people), and would choose something simple but visually striking over a design that was very busy.
