Wie Elterwater Press das erste buchcover Abenteuer antrat
Peter Fox has long held a fascination for the past, with an abiding passion for the peoples and places of the so-called Dark Ages. He studied prehistory and geography at university, during which time he experienced his first real taste of archaeology; fighting his way through the steamy tropical jungles of Papua New Guinea searching for evidence of its early inhabitants.
Following the completion of his degree, he took up a post as Curatorial Assistant at the fledgling National Museum of Australia. It was during his time at the Museum that the seeds for this novel were sown. One hot summer’s afternoon whilst reading the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, he stumbled upon a passage referring to the fall of the once powerful British kingdom of Dumnonia (present-day Cornwall and Devon). The concise, blandly worded entry was to spark the creation of the Wolves of Dumnonia saga, of which The Shadow of Fenrir is the first volume.
Peter now lives with his wife Jo, son Ethan, and whippet Lola in the beautiful English Lake District, where he is surrounded by the Old Norse names that pepper the Lakeland landscape.

The first of five books that make up the Wolves of Dumnonia saga, The Shadow of Fenrir is a tale of ancient kingdoms, lost treasure and one young man’s quest for identity. Set in the Viking Age against the dramatic backdrop of the Norwegian fjords, we follow the turbulent coming-of-age of orphaned Briton, Caelin ap Cadwyr, AKA Rathulf Thorvaldarsson. It is both fast-moving adventure story and thoughtful portrayal of a young man struggling to find his place in an increasingly bewildering world.
The title of the book alludes to the fact that our hero was found wrapped in a family standard comprising two snarling wolves. This is also the origin of his adopted Norse name–Rathulf–meaning ‘wolven counsel’. Initially, the wolven standard leads his Viking saviours to believe him blessed by the twin wolves, Geri and Freki, pets of the paramount god Odin. As a series of disasters befalls Rathulf, however, the folk of Norvegur begin to wonder whether Rathulf has a different destiny that must not be ignored for fear of invoking the wrath of the most fearsome of monsters, the giant wolf Fenrir. It is this ever-present shadow of ruin that Rathulf must fight off in order to move forward and live out his chosen life as a Viking.
Inspired by events recorded in the mediaeval Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Wolves of Dumnonia saga recounts the twilight years of one of the last great British Kingdoms: Dumnonia. The series follows the lives of the two surviving heirs, Aneurin and Caelin, who are symbolized by the two wolves of their family’s royal standard. Separated in childhood amidst their treacherous uncle’s violent conquest of Dumnonia, the two brothers have led utterly different lives as they have grown into manhood. A mystical strand of awareness binds them, however, and as the saga progresses, their paths begin to converge as each seeks out the other.
Both wolven kin are driven by the same unwavering purpose: to one day return to Dumnonia and together reclaim their stolen kingdom.

Was vermieden werden soll
No horned helmets! I am after an authentic feel to the cover, and despite common misconception, Vikings didn't wear them.
