I'm looking for a moody cover that perhaps plays with light and darkness, that evokes slight unease in the viewer.
The story is about a crazy man stalking a high school girl through the abandoned halls of an asylum, so the cover should help show that cat-and-mouse feeling of threat and danger, or maybe capture the feel of the abandoned asylum building.
I imagine having the asylum building featuring prominently (it stands on a flat coastline, no cliffs, maybe some woods nearby, or a lake). Building reference ideas are provided in the files section, but feel free to use your own creativity and imagination. The only requirements regarding the asylum building is that central spire (almost like a lighthouse shape), and it should be creepy-looking (it's been long abandoned, so there are broken windows, overgrown gardens etc. depending on the level of detail you're choosing to render.) It's a longish building on either side of the central spire, like 6 rooms/windows to either side, and there are 4 levels to the non-spire parts.
Along with it, I imagine the threatening silhouette of a man in a doorway cast either above or below the asylum building, wherever it will fit nicely in the image.
Opposed to the man, there might be a cowering young girl (age around 16) somewhere in the picture opposite him.
There are also some spiritual elements featuring in the story (ghosts hang around in the asylum, some good, some bad), so you might also hint slightly at a subtle ghostly presence in the image somewhere that is separate from the threatening man.
Image colors are mainly up to the designer, use your best judgment. I have a slight preference for cooler colors like blue and purple, and for having the whole feeling of the cover be darker rather than lighter, but by all means, if you can impress me with your own style and go a different way (red colors, perhaps, or a freaky white-based or brown-based cover, for example), I would be happy to see your ideas and consider them.
For the text, place the book title at the top, and author name at the bottom, and please use your best judgment on color and font (I will provide feedback to guide this more as the contest progresses). The font can be a touch creepy, but not way-out, please (for example, not the Goosebumps font or anything like that). Please keep it classy and looking like a book mainly for adults.
I probably don't need to say this, but cover needs to be minimum 300 DPI for print version. Barcode space to be left empty for adding later.
