I am looking for a book cover design for a fantasy/comedy that will work as both an e-book cover as well as a Createspace cover. Here is what I envision:
The title is “Auric the Great” and should be prominent in the design. Maybe block letters? The font should be “heroic”. I picture “Auric” being on one line and “the Great” being on the next. One of the important and mandatory aspects of the design is that “the Great” needs to appear like someone crossed it out because they disagree. Despite being crossed out, it does need to still be readily legible as part of the title.
For the front image (and sole image for the ebook version), I would like to see the central image of a broom (the protagonist likes to sweep and carries around a broom). Please note, this book is set in medieval-like time period, so the broom should have an older look to it (wood handle, bristles that appear to be straw, etc – nothing “plastic”, perfect symmetry is probably not ideal). I picture the sweeping part of the broom being up and the handle part being down.
Fanned out beside the broom, featured less and less prominently on each side the farther out to the edges we go, should be an array of medieval weaponry. Swords, axes, pikes, spears. Take your pick – just make sure the broom is in the center and is the focal point. I don’t really want any hands/arms in the graphic (unless you’ve got something really cool in mind) – so maybe just have the whole graphic fade into black/gray/the background as we get closer to the bottom of the page?
At the bottom of the front cover will be the author’s name: Brett Kelberry. It should be clear, but does not need to draw too much attention.
In terms of a color scheme – you guys know more than I do about what might work. I like the idea of a golden/yellow/bronze colored background, with the broom and weaponry being in black/gray/silver/white scale (weapons are generally those colors anyway, right?).
If you think there is enough room on the spine, please add the Title and Author.
The back cover (for the Createspace), I’d like to keep simple. Another prominent aspect from the book would be a basket (think wicker picnic basket with a handle and a cloth in it) with a few, round gingersnap cookies outside of it. The colors, etc, should flow from the front to the back. Text for the back cover:
“Auric the Great is a hero of legends. Strong, handsome, brave … everything except punctual. When he fails to show up for his quest, it is up to a scheming history wizard, a blind bard, and a replacement Auric – the broom-toting store clerk – to finagle their way through the predestined adventure in his behalf.
What could possibly go wrong?”
Size dimensions for the Createspace: 294 pages, 6 x 9 in, on white paper. The spine will be roughly .663” by their calculation. Here are the CreateSpace directions (though I’m guessing most of you have them memorized)
Those are just my ideas. Really the core concept is this – this book is a fantasy book and the cover should convey that. This book is a comedy – it is meant to make people laugh – and the cover should convey that aspect as well. The broom is mandatory in some fashion. Past that, if you’ve got a great idea, I’d be open to seeing it.
• Sized PDF image for e-book cover
• PDF image (front, spine & back cover) for CreateSpace,
• original Photoshop file(s) in case the text needs to be updated.
• All art needs to be original.
I would also like to give you credit for your artwork, and would include the artist's website/email to promote themselves if they desire.
