I am looking for an artist who will illustrate the entire series, so this first illustration is very important. Also, it's not just how good the cover is, but how easy it is to work with the artist as I want to work long term with that artist. So I want someone who has read each of the books and likes them. I'm attaching the complete manuscript to the Design Brief so you can read it. The manuscript is about 120 pages long – 56,000 words (which is a short novel). Hopefully, reading it will give you a clear picture of what the cover should look like.
This first book is a prequel to a series which will cover at least 21 books. I'm currently working on the first book in the series. So far it seems to take about 6-7 months to write a story, so I will need a cover every 6-7 months, plus other images to go along with the books that I will be putting on my blog (pictures of the characters, the different locations, the world, etc.)
Plus, once I finish this series, there will be another series (related to this one) that takes place 12,000 years earlier.
All the books take place on a pre-industrial planet.
The main character in this first book is Geraint. He discovers he has the ability to hear crystal which will eventually allow him to read energy and (sort of) foretell the future. The crystal (as it will show up in later books) is also used as a weapon.
In this prequel, Geraint is 13 and a dwarf (think a young Tyrion from the HBO series Game of Thrones as played by Peter Dinklage).
Geraint's sister, Brys, is tall and lean (can the big breasts), is 16 and pledges Khutulun during the book (red vest, ribbons, and the emblem of a snake) and (at the end) an intricately carved medallion around her neck. While this prequel is not her story, she becomes extremely important at the end and in later books.
Elements in the book: crystal, horses, mountains, fire, tents, Geraint, Brys
I don't want to suggest too much because I don't want to influence the design in a direction that might not be the best choice for the book.
I don't want something that's been done to death (in other words, not a typical fantasy or SF cover).
However, to give you some direction, here are links to 5 covers that I particularly like:
Also see the original Game of Throne covers (before the HBO series) that were simple, but highly effective.
Crystals will be an element in all the books.
Most importantly, I want the cover to convey the essence of the book. When people see the cover, I want them to HAVE TO at least check it out. However, as you can see from the samples, I particularly like a watercolor-like effect. Illustrations – not photography. I also prefer simple as opposed to an overly complicated cover. Less is more.
This series is mythological, NOT high fantasy. It is more of an epic, so most like Game of Thrones, the Pern series by McCaffrey, and Marion Zimmer Bradley's books than anything else. It is not hard SF and it is not high fantasy – which is important because there are no elves or other Tolkein like creatures and I don't want people thinking it is.
Finally, the artist should include their credit on the back cover and I will be including them on the listing on Amazon and Smashwords, plus there will be a link on my website going to theirs so they get credit for the work they do (and hopefully get more clients!).
The book will be published for the Kindle and other digital formats (via Smashwords and other), plus it will be published as a print book via CreateSpace.
All the art needs to be original and striking. No clip art and no stock.
Cover art for an ebook/paperback. I will need front, back, and spine. Title and author name on the front and spine, placeholders for description and ISBN, on the back.
Text on the cover should include the Title, the Author Name and "A prequel to the Purgatory Series".
Text on the spine should be title and author name.
Text on the back should be "Fantasy" for the category in the upper right corner, the description (to come), my website (http://www.kieranmckendrick.com), your credit, a space for the ISBN (I will send that to you once the contest is over) and "A prequel to the Purgatory Series".
The image needs to follow Amazon KDP select guidelines –
I also need your agreement to add the description to the back later at no additional cost, or have the file be in a format I can easily modify myself.
Finally, I will be traveling on December 29 but should be available again late on the 30th if there are any questions.
